Head towards the archipelago

Jokikatu in PorvooIf you are travelling by car or motorbike, after touring the centre of Porvoo, why not head for the idyllic archipelago? To find the route, head directly south along the riverbank on Jokikatu Street.

Highway no. 1551 takes you to the Pellinki archipelago but before that there are many places worth a visit. Make a detour from the highway to Kråkö, where you can have a swim. Going back to the main road you pass through Voolahti village, where with a bit of luck you can see a glimpse of the traditional sailing boat, the yacht Alexandra. The road continues to wind towards the sea and leads by highway no. 1552 to Tirmo. On the shore at Tirmo you will find a shop and a café-bar much favoured by summer visitors and also the Outboard Museum.

Pellinki ferryFrom here the journey continues by ferry across a narrow channel to the Pellinki archipelago. This is a free trip that is beginning to be a rare thing in modern Finland! The archipelago consists of several islands, which are linked together by bridges. When did you last taste freshly baked salmon? Tillman’s fish shop, Benitas Cafe and the traditional grocer’s shop Söderby-Boden are great examples of the services provided by the islanders. Hörbergsgården with its farmyard is a place where memories of the past are preserved. The Local History Museum is open on summer Sundays, but you can watch the world go by in the grounds at other times, too. There is a chapel close by.

When you turn back towards Porvoo from Pellinki, it’s worth continuing on the road north. On the way, you will find a charming Bed&Breakfast at Strandhagen – an excellent place to spend the night outside town. If you follow the highway straight ahead it ends at Sannainen, and the road turning off left takes you through an industrial estate back to the town centre. If you turn right you come to Pernaja and Loviisa. A good minor road, no. 1571, passes through idyllic little villages to Isnäs, and turning right at the T junction you reach the sea with Rönnäs holiday village en route. Turning left you join highway no. 1580 ”King’s Road”, which leads to Loviisa.
