SummergirlWarm and bright summer

Summer in Porvoo begins in May and lasts until mid-September. The average summer temperature - for day and 'night' - is around 16,3°C. On hot days the temperature can rise to around 30°C. Porvoo is usually at its warmest in July. The highest temperature ever recorded in Helsinki is 31.6°C. The highest temperature ever recorded is from July 9, 1914, when 35°C was exceeded in several places (the maximum being 35.9°C in Turku).

The Porvoo summer is bright white. During the summer equinox in late-June there are no less than 19 hours of daylight between sunrise and sunset.

Temperatures cool significantly towards the end of September, and the days grow noticeably shorter with the impending arrival of winter. The first night frosts are usually in the middle of September.

Porvoo in winterCold and snowy winter

The winter season begins in November or early-December, when temperatures vary either side of 0°C. The first snow falls usually in middle of October. The average temperature between December and February is around -4,8°C.

The coldest time of the year is usually around the end of January or the beginning of February, when temperatures can fall to below -15°C and the sea is often frozen. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Helsinki was -34.3°C in 1987. The lowest temperature recorded at any weather station in Finland this century is -51.5°C (1999).

In Porvoo the snow and ice starts melting midway through March. Spring arrives late in Porvoo, usually around April. The psychological landmark for the arrival of spring is May 1, or Vappu, a time of feverish celebrations across the country. The days quickly grow lighter and the first warm days prepare everyone for the coming summer.

Daylight in Porvoo

Around Midsummer in northern Finland, the sun does not set for several weeks. Even in Porvoo, the "night" consists of a period of prolonged twilight rather than real darkness. Imagine leaving a Porvoo nightclub to find the sun has risen before you have had the chance to go to bed. In winter the days are short all over Finland and the sun is very low on the horizon even at midday. By mid-April the sun stays above the horizon for 14 to 15 hours in southern Finland.
